Hey guys, Happy Sunday! Today, I’m finally getting around to introducing a new member of the family… meet Subie.

Having Subie around was so sudden and spontaneous. Eric (my boyfriend) and I were planning to adopt a puppy after we moved out but out of the blue- my mom asked me if I wanted to adopt a puppy?! Which in insanity because she was the type of mom that NEVER wanted to have a dog. I remember my sisters and I growing up always begging our parents to get a puppy but the obvious, quick answer was always no. They’re hard work, messy and not to mention VERY expensive. I gave up asking, but knew when I moved out adopting a puppy would be first on my to-do list.

Now here she is. Currently sitting beside me snoozing away as I type this blog post for this Vegan Pumpkin Dog Treat recipe out.

I’ve been so busy and occupied taking care of her, honestly I’m pretty set back on a lot of work but thats okay. I want to be there for her especially now when it’ her prime time to learn and grow.

She’s been nothing but… amazing. I’m always so much more happier now. Even when I’m mad, I look over and I forget why I’m mad. My entire family is always smiling and it’s actually crazy how much happiness she’s brought into our family. And as a huge plus, she’s super friendly and she LOVES people.

On the “training” side of things, she learned to poop outside on the second day of coming home. She actually didn’t need any crate training, we just put her bed in there and she willingly goes into the crate when it’s time to sleep or when we need to step out. Right now, we’re working on training her to pee outside & to stop biting … everything!! We’re defiantly going to be taking her to classes as soon as she finishes all her shots because shibas are a pretty stubborn breed. She only really listens if we have a treat (in particular, this puppy pumpkin treat). She even walks over to me and raises her paw every time she wants one!

Subie will defiantly be around on the blog a lot more and I’m super excited about it. If you want to see more of Subie, come say hi over on her instagram! Okay okay, NOW let’s get into these Pumpkin Dog Treats.

I had a hard time finding vegan dog treats in the market so I knew I wanted to make my own at home. The benefits of making homemade dog treats is that:

  1. you know exactly everything thats going into them
  2. they’re WAY cheaper
  3. you can customize it to what your puppy likes!

Subie doesn’t really seem to like the dried up meat treats anyways so these are perfect! PLUSSS, it’s pumpkin season soon. Puppies and dogs should be celebrating pumpkin season too!

What Ingredients go into these Vegan Dog Treats?

  • Pumpkin puree – homemade or the canned with JUST pumpkin as the ingredient. Pumpkin is actually really good for dogs because it’s nutrients rich!
  • Peanut butter – because dogs literally go NUTS for this stuff. Make sure to use one that has ONLY peanut butter as the ingredient!
  • Flax Meal – helps maintain healthy skin + coat
  • Oat flour (made from gluten free rolled oats) – as a base because it’s fiber rich + good if your dog is sensitive to gluten too
  • and some cinnamon if you fancy… just a tad and apparently it helps with their breath?

Yuppp, just 4 real simple, real healthy ingredients.

How to Make Vegan Pumpkin Dog Treats

Super easy. Just combine the ingredients together, roll it out, cut them out and bake! Exactly like how you would make regular cookies. The longer they bake, the more crispy the cookies get but make sure not to burn them. I used these super cute dog cookie cutters and also imprinted her name on them… cause I’m a little extra. *cuteness overload*

How to Store These Vegan Pumpkin Dog Treats

There aren’t any preservatives in them so they will last in the fridge for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Instructions

  1. Preheat: Pre-heat oven to 350 F.
  2. Combine: Add the pumpkin puree, peanut butter, flax meal and cinnamon (if using) into a food processor and blend until combined.
  3. Process: Add in the oat flour and process until a dough forms.
  4. Cut: Lightly flour a cutting board and roll out the dough (around 1/4 inch thick). Use cookie cutters to cut as many pieces as you can and place them onto a parchment lined baking tray. Gather the remaining dough and repeat until you run out of dough.
  5. Bake: Bake for 30-35 minutes.
  6. Let them cool on a cooling rack and them store in the fridge for 1 week or freezer for 2 months.

Notes

*If you don’t have oat flour on hand, use rolled oats (weighed into the same amount) and blend in a high speed blender until a flour consistency.
