Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

You can use canned beets as long as they do not contain salt, sugar, or other ingredients. The only ingredients listed on the can should be beets and water.

Store-bought oat flour is somewhat expensive and sometimes not available in a regular grocery store. You can make it by placing uncooked old-fashioned or quick oats in a food processor or blender and blending until it reaches a flour consistency.

You can substitute oat flour with rice flour. You can also make it with uncooked rice.

If your dog does not have a wheat allergy, you can substitute oat flour with all-purpose flour or a 50-50 combination of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. The amount will have to be adjusted since those flours will cause the dough to have a different consistency. It will take less of those flours than oat flour. Because whole wheat flour is denser, it’s not a good substitute to use by itself.

Equipment Needed

You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make the treats. You can use any regular silicone treat or candy mold, but adog bone moldgives them a fun look.

Tip: Use molds for Valentine’s Day, Easter, or Christmas to make them for those holidays.

Serving Size

How many homemade beet treats should you give your canine companion? That depends on the amount of food you gave your pet to eat that day and the size of your dog. Large dogs can consume more than smaller dogs.

Even though they are healthy treats, they are still treats and should be included when you consider your dog’s daily caloric intake. Make sure you don’t exceed the recommended amount for your dog. That amount changes for each dog breed, size, and activity level.

Dogs shouldn’t have too many treats, including these yummy ones. For this reason, I suggest only giving your spoiled hound one treat per day.

However, you can use your judgment or consult with your veterinarian regarding how many treats are right for your dog.

Also, keep in mind when adding new foods to your dog’s diet to start with small amounts to ensure your dog has no allergic or adverse reactions.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature. They will last up to 5 days. Refrigerating them may extend the shelf life by a couple of days.

For longer storage, freeze the treats in a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag. They will last up to 4 months. You can give the treats to your dog frozen or thaw them.

Can people eat these doggie beet treats?

Yes, all the ingredients are safe for human consumption. Although I doubt folks would enjoy them.
