How to play Klondike Solitaire

The game will automatically arrange the initial setup. Below, you can find a timer, settings, an undo button, and your best times. You can also start a new game at any point.

The play area is the tableau. This is made up of seven stacks of cards that each have an extra face-down card than the one before. You may arrange cards one at a time between columns in descending order. However, the cards must alternate colors.

When a card is moved to another column, the facedown card underneath is revealed. When a column becomes empty, you may move a King (and only a King) into the spot.

The spaces marked above are called foundations. These are spaces you’re going to fill in order to complete the game. There’s one for each suit—clubs, diamonds, spades, and hearts—and you must start each with its appropriate Ace, then 2, then 3, and so on. Once you’ve filled up to the King in each foundation, you win!

The draw pile is called the stock. This is where you’ll reveal new cards and add them to the tableau. The waste is the discard pile, and it is shuffled in the exact same order when the stock is finished. In Klondike, you must draw three cards at a time and use the first card before using the second or third. For this example, we can’t use the Queen, so we have to put all three cards back.

The objective in Klondike is to fill each of your foundations all the way up to a King. Your tableau has many unrevealed cards, and you have a whole stock to search through for cards. How do you win Klondike now?

It’s a good idea to try and reveal Aces anywhere you can, as you can’t build foundations without starting there. These can be found in your stock, but you want to reveal as many cards on your tableau as possible before you start adding cards to the mix. The more cards on top of the unflipped cards, the harder it’s going to be to flip them.

Also, pay attention to the three cards being pulled each time. It’s going to be a pain to go through the stock and not get lucky with the first in line. However, when you find one that fits, the line shifts down so to speak. If you’re hurting for moves, see what’s changed in your stock.

Build out columns with the King up top when you can; you’ll want to move these columns to any open spaces. When you’re able to, put cards into your foundation that are available. This is one of the reasons not to build columns too big.
