The BEST Cheese Ball Recipe

This might be my most favorite cheese ball recipe of all-time. The recipe is from a family friend and my Mom has been making it during the holidays for as long as I can remember. I could literally eat the whole thing myself! Not only is it crazy good, but it is also super easy to make. You probably have everything in your refrigerator to whip this up right now for a New Year’s Eve party!

How to Make the Best Cheese Roll

As I said, this is very easy to make. Mix together cheddar cheese, cream cheese, dry mustard, garlic powder, tabasco, Worcestershire, and mayonnaise. Shape into a roll.
Combine chili powder and paprika. Roll the cheese log in chili powder mixture to coat outside of cheese roll. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

  • I like to make one big log, but you could also split it into two rolls or balls if you prefer.
  • You can use any shredded cheese you prefer in place of the cheddar cheese. Smoked gouda would be delicious!
  • You can use low-fat cream cheese if you prefer.
  • If you aren’t a fan of mayonnaise, you can substitute sour cream.
  • Is this Cheese Ball spicy? Not at all. If you are worried about they heat, feel free to omit Tabasco and roll the cheese ball in pecans.
  • This cheese ball will keep about 2 weeks tightly wrapped in the refrigerator.
  • Is this Cheese Roll gluten-free? Yes! Use a gluten-free Worcestershire sauce such as Lea & Perrins.
  • Is this Cheese Roll low-carb & keto-friendly? There is 1 gram of sugar and 1 gram of carbs in each teaspoon of Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce. There are only 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce in this recipe. If you want to minimize the carbs you can cut the Worcestershire in half or omit it altogether.

What to Serve with a Cheese Ball

Serve the cheese ball with your favorite crackers. I like Sociables and Wheat Thins. Serve this with some veggie slices if are looking for gluten-free/low-carb/keto-friendly options. As I said, I absolutely LOVE this cheese ball recipe. It is a MUST for my holiday snacking.

Here are a few more of my favorite holiday snacks that go great with this cheese ball:

FAQs

Why is my cheese ball so hard? ›

Why is my cheese ball so hard? You want your cheese ball to be firm enough to hold its shape, but soft enough to allow for easy spreading. To achieve this consistency, the key is making sure your cream cheese is softened before preparing.

How long does a cheese ball need to chill? ›

Cover the cheeseball in cling wrap and refrigerate for about 1 hour to allow it to firm up. Take it out of the refrigerator about 20 minutes before serving to allow it to soften just slightly. Serve with crackers, pretzels, vegetables or anything else you'd love to dip in cheese!

What is a cheese ball made of? ›

Cheese balls are traditionally made with two kinds of cheese – cream cheese (or another soft cheese like quark cheese, mascarpone or ricotta) and a grated semi-soft or semi-firm cheese like cheddar, colby cheese, monterey jack cheese, or muenster.

What crackers are good with a cheese ball? ›

I like serving my cheese balls with buttery crackers like Ritz, but you can use any cracker.

What makes cheese softer? ›

In the case of a soft cheese like Brie, the curds are delicately moved from their initial vat into a container where they're allowed to drain slowly over a period of hours. This approach retains a lot of moisture in the cheese. The greater the moisture content in the final product, the softer it is.

Why is my cheese ball not firm? ›

Your cheese ball is too runny: Once you have added all the extras, and it's all mixed in well, if the texture is more salad dressing-like than something you might spread on a bagel, you can tighten it up easily by adding unsalted butter, one tablespoon at a time, mixing before you add more.

How do you firm up a cheeseball? ›

It will firm up in the refrigerator. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour, until the cheese ball is firm enough to handle. Combine the chopped pecans and parsley on a plate. Unwrap the cheese ball and roll it in the nut mixture until evenly coated.

How do you thicken a cheese ball? ›

If your cheese ball is not firm enough, try putting it in the fridge for another hour or two. If it is still not thick enough, add some additional pre-shredded cheese and cream cheese and let it chill for another hour or two up to overnight to help thicken it.

Can a cheese ball be left out overnight? ›

The U.S. Department of Health doesn't recommend keeping any perishable food sitting out of the fridge for more than two hours — and that's certainly the case for soft cheeses, like cottage or cream cheese, brie, or fresh mozzarella.

How many cheese balls are in a cheese ball jar? ›

They're the unsung heroes of every food-fueled social gathering, and there are more than 1,100 of them in any given barrel. I'm talking, of course, about Utz Cheese Balls -- specifically, the giant barrels of them you can find at Walmart or Target or Sam's Club (pretty much wherever giant barrels of things are sold).

Who made the original cheese ball? ›

"According to legend," writes Michelle Buffardi, author of Great Balls of Cheese, "the first cheese ball in recorded history was made in 1801 by Elisha Brown, Jr. on his farm and presented to President Thomas Jefferson" at the White House.

Can I freeze a cheese ball? ›

Cheese balls freeze quite well. Again, it's best to wrap the cheese ball in one layer of plastic wrap, then one layer of aluminum foil. Freeze for up to four weeks. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

How long will a homemade cheese ball last in the refrigerator? ›

Storing in Fridge: If you start with fresh ingredients, you can store the cheese ball in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Cover any leftovers with plastic wrap and store in an airtight container. How to Freeze: I prefer a freshly made cheese ball, BUT you can freeze cheese balls.

Are Ritz crackers butter crackers? ›

Our Favorite Butter Cracker: Ritz

Simply put, these scalloped golden discs have an ideal level of saltiness.

How do you fix hardened cheese? ›

Wrap the cheese in a damp paper towel, place it in a resealable plastic bag, and chill it for a day. Then remove the towel and store the cheese in the bag — it should be good to grate!

How do you keep cheese from hardening? ›

If you just melt cheese it begins to harden as soon as it starts to cool. If you want it to stay liquid you need to emulsify it with something. How do you get cheese to melt so it's soft and creamy? Sodium citrate (not citric acid), aka “sour salt” is the secret.

Is it OK to eat hardened cheese? ›

If you're tempted to throw an entire block of cheese away because the edges have hardened, don't. The inner portions of the cheese are most likely completely fine. If the cheese smells and tastes normal, and the surface isn't slimy or moldy, then it's still safe to eat.
