One of the most exciting parts of getting a new dog is choosing from all the hundreds of wonderful dog breeds in this world. Dogs come in all shapes, colors and sizes. But personally, I love small dog breeds the most. They’re small, but always sweet.

So how many small dog breeds are there? There’s a lot. However, there are only 65 small dog breeds officially recognized by the AKC. All of which, have their own unique personality and charm. In this list of small dogs, we’ll cover all recognized breeds.

What’s Considered a Small Dog?

“Small” is subjective, right? Not exactly. According to the AKC, a small dog breed weighs less than 22 pounds and/or is shorter than 16 inches.

Given these requirements, we have 65 small dog breeds (67 if you count size variations). In fact, many of these dogs are much smaller than the 22 pounds / 16 inches limit.

For example, the smallest purebred dog breed is the Chihuahua. These dogs weigh 6 to 8 pounds and stand at a height of 6 to 9 inches.

Breeding down in size, toy dog breeds are even smaller! They weigh between 4 to 7 pounds and can be much shorter in height.
